Conic Fitting Using the Geometric Distance

We consider the problem of fitting a conic to a set of 2D points. It is commonly agreed that minimizing geometrical error, i.e. the sum of squared distances between the points and the conic, is better than using an algebraic error measure. However, most existing methods rely on algebraic error measures. This is usually motivated by the fact that pointto-conic distances are difficult to compute ...

A Buyer's Guide to Conic Fitting

In this paper we evaluate several methods of fitting data to conic sections. Conic fitting is a commonly required task in machine vision, but many algorithms perform badly on incomplete or noisy data. We evaluate several algorithms under various noise and degeneracy conditions, identify the key parameters which affect sensitivity, and present the results of comparative experiments which emphasi...

Statistical Bias of Conic Fitting and Renormalization

Introducing a statistical model of noise in terms of the covariance matrix of the N-vector, we point out that the least-squares conic fitting is statistically biased. We present a new fitting scheme called renormalization for computing an unbiased estimate by automatically adjusting to noise. Relationships to existing methods are discussed, and our method is tested using real and synthetic data.

Curve fitting and fairing using conic splines

We present an efficient geometric algorithm for conic spline curve fitting and fairing through conic arc scaling. Given a set of planar points, we first construct a tangent continuous conic spline by interpolating the points with a quadratic Bézier spline curve or fitting the data with a smooth arc spline. The arc spline can be represented as a piecewise quadratic rational Bézier spline curve. ...

On the Shemetkov Problem for Fitting Classes ∗

Suppose that π be a set of primes and F a local Fitting class. Let Kπ(F) be the set of finite π-soluble groups with a Hall πsubgroup belonging to F. In this paper, we show that the class Kπ(F) is a local Fitting class. Thus, an interesting Shemetkov question for Fitting classes will be answered positively. By using the result, the F-radical of a Hall π-subgroup of a finite π-soluble group is de...
